The two-hour event inspired and ignited a desire to learn computer programming. Girls who attended had a diverse level of experience with coding: Some had little or no knowledge of programming while others had successfully completed AP Computer Science courses. During the event, the attendees learned the basics of Python, a widely used programming language, and worked on Google’s Made With Code projects. Each attendee came out of the event with an understanding of how computer programming would benefit their careers and all agreed to continue developing their skills. Trinity, one of the participants, came in with very little experience and left excited to continue to learn coding as she felt she could “program a machine that could aid surgeons.”
Invite a girl you know to code at a Girls Inc. Coding Party throughout the County. Upcoming parties will be held on April 8 and May 6, with more to come! REGISTER TO ATTEND ( ROSA ATTENDS PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S CONFERENCE TO LEARN AND GROW GISDC’s program coordinator Rosa Alvarado recently attended the Girls Inc. Program Director Institute to learn more about the Girls. Inc vision and attend workshops to strategize for program growth and development. As our program coordinator, Rosa works with our girls each week, running meaningful programs that help girls learn life skills to be successful. She also creates a pro-girls environment, identifies girls who need additional support, and shapes the curriculum to make it relevant to the lives of our participants. For Rosa, the conference helped emphasize that “We always need to make the setting pro-girl, encourage them and push them to be the best they can possibly be.” CALLING VOLUNTEERS TO HELP SUPPORT GIRLS Want to empower and mentor girls? GISDC needs volunteers to help our graduating girls prepare for the GISDC Graduation Celebration to be held on May 18. Volunteers will help the girls write remarks and prepare them to speak publicly at the event. This mentoring will take place over a six to eight week period and involves meeting with the girls one or two times in person in Escondido as well as following up via email or phone to mentor them along the way. We are also seeking volunteers to help high school girls learn to code at one of our upcoming Coding Parties on April 8 and May 6. If you are interested in volunteering, please email us at ( .
